Minami Awaji is known for producing “awajigawara”, a type of Japanese roof tile made of clay.
Awajigawara is known for its oxidized silver look, created with the use of not only hands but items such as wooden or gold spatulas while scraping and adding clay for several days. Kawara artisans spend an immense amount of time creating the “kawara”, giving the finished piece its sophisticated, oxidized silver look.
Items are loved for centuries when they are created under the concept of “use”, whether that be part of your everyday life or, just cultural.
